The berry fields are ripening now,
Their sweet fruit all aglow.
My husband liked it turned to jam,
In jars all in a row.

He is not here to eat it now,
Why am I standing here,
By this hot stove, still making jam,
As I have for many a year?

A jar or two would do for me,
So why do I take the trouble,
To stay right here and stir and stir,
And watch it bubble and bubble?

I cannot break the habit
That I had so many years.
It looks so pretty in the jars,
As I see them through my tears.

My son-inlaw can eat my jam,
For breakfast every day.
He likes it thickly spread on toast,
And to nibble it away.

I'll package it for his birthday gift,
And indeed for Christmas too;
So he will never want for jam,
Any day, the whole year through.

I am so very thankful,
Even though my dear one's gone,
I have others who will love it,
So I'll keep jammin' on.

This is a sweet poem, Joyce! I wish I could taste that jam! Maybe you could ship me a jar!
