Jenny reads
in the English classroom
of World War I trenches filled with misty death;
the flying shrapnel that lanced dark times and
barbed wire entanglements—with scarecrows trapped
on motionless strands;
of blank eyes that stare into the rain
as bitter streams pour into gaping mouths that scream no more;
and she reads of rats that swim around feet that slowly rot,
as the shadow soldiers of the past can only pray
it’s all quiet on the western front.

And Jenny weeps
with terror, as death consumes her vivid mind,
for her mother who has step into
a desert storm.

very painful to read and especially for a child.  Wish it were a fairy tale!

Very moving piece. For awhile students only read about war, but it didn't bother them. Now when they read, they have a real fear because it does touch them or someone they know.
