I like the sight of fields that wait
For fertile seeds to propagate
And soon send tender shoots to show
As green as grass, down every row.
Then afterwhile, I am aware
There is a hint of amber there.
Late summer brings a golden tide
Of ripened wheat.  I stand beside
An uncut field, where bearded heads,
Hang heavy over earthy beds.
I like to claim a grain or two
To roll around my mouth and chew.
The taste invoking memory
Of fresh baked bread and family.
Of threshing crews who came to stay
And worked from dawn to dark each day.
I think about the trips I made
Across the fields, with lemonade.
About the groaning tables laid
Beneath the trees where there was shade.
Though methods have changed drastically,
The wheat tastes just the same to me.

Dear Marge:  Thanks for stopping in and for reading this.  That "meter thingie" seems to be the only way I can write! Glad you liked the poem.

Dear Barb:

This is a relic of growing up in Canada!  My uncle owned a township all planted to wheat.  Thanks so much for commenting.

Dear Betty Lou

There is a 'grain' of truth in your verse. We will never look at another slice of bread in the same way as we will always be reminded of your lovely poem of 'Wheat'.

Dear Isobel:  Thank you for your nice remarks. I'm glad I hve seen wheat growing in the fields, being ground into flour and mixed into dough, to be baked into loaves!
