The future is our children
The world is theirs to tame
Without giving a good education
We are only dimming their flame.
Kids don't know about taxes
Or what it costs to run a school
They simply go to learn all they can
While the adults continue to duel.
Each spring we hear from the same few
Who will never be satisfied
They diminish the kids achievements
And try to take away their pride.
They claim to have all the answers
But I wonder, at what cost?
While they're enforcing their demands
How many kids will be lost?
And why do they blame the teachers
When some of the kids start to roam?
Shouldn't respect and right from wrong,
Be taught within the home?
Who are these people anyway?
Who call themselves my voice
They will never speak for me
As a citizen I still have a choice.
And as I vote for the budget
The kids are my first concern
Just let the teachers do their jobs
Let them teach so our children can learn.

A very good point, indeed!  I'm sad to say that the situation is no different north of the 49th parallel.  The parents blame the teachers, the teachers blame the school board, the school board...you know.
In the middle of it all are the kids. Sad.
Well written piece, BSC!

This should be read at every PTA meeting...you very nicely summed up a situation that I've discussed with a friend for years...she teaches English in an inner city high school, and the students are so poor, and I have seen her take money out of her own pocket and buy them supplies, and watched her personally call her students to remind them of exams....and she has been slapped, and spit on...and threatened...but her dedication is incredible...she is truly my hero...sorry for the ramble...lol...but you "got me" with this one...

Trew, guess it's the same everywhere, the shame of it is it's the kids who lose.
Martie, thanks.
Serenity, definitely not a ramble, at times it's a pretty tough job they've got.
Sudhir, thanks so much.
BDC, Wow, hope they enjoy it.

Thank you all for reading and for your kind replies.  Bonnie

As a teacher...you have no idea how these words were appreciated.  If we were left to only teach...what a great world this would be.  Thank you for saying it so well.  Linda

This is such an important subject. There are many things that need to be considered here and it's not being done. Glad you wrote this it needed to be done.

I think the clincher is the verse excluding the teacher from blame and switching it back to the home and the early years where the child should be taught respect for others.
There's a serious flaw in our society as it is with the break down of the family unit but that only becomes worse when the child is allowed to roam (run wild). I know this is a real hornet's nest of a topic...there are so many things to consider....however, I am glad that you took the time to write this piece and stand up for the importance of education and the important role the teacher plays

Very nicely written. This should be sent to every school in America and then I think you should run for School Board President of your district to make this poem a reality.  Go for it BSC
