Sitting here we watch each other,
Wait with baited breath…
Hoping, longing, to discover-
There is something left.

Something we can salvage-
From a marriage, gone all wrong…
That's why we watch each word we say,
And play our favorite song.

I don’t want to hurt your feelings.
You don’t want me mad…
Reminisces are unreeling,
Good times that we had.

Still there runs an undercurrent-
Vows we both have made…
Promises, and confidences,
That we have betrayed.

I see fences rise between us-
That, were almost down…
Gone the gentle introspection,
Now replaced by frowns.

So we rise, and, oh, so formal-
Wish each other health…
Guess that things are back to normal,
Feelings on a shelf.

Married people have their problems,
That there’s no denying…
Touch your gloves, return to corners,
Then you come out fighting.

Great writing.
You have expressed part
of a bad marriage...no one
should have to tip-toe
around love!
I always look for your poetry!

Hi Gunslinger....I find it so sad that
               married people fall into these
ruts, when all they have to
               do is talk!!!
                 This expressed the feelings
               involved in that situation
so well, that it brought back
               a few memories!!!  It's good
to learn from the past, eh?
                     Great work here!!

GS boy do I know this one.
When things get stuck on that shelf because they can't be discussed without the boxing gloves on.  You've written it well!

It would be a wonderful world if we could just get rid of those fences. You've described it perfectly, John! Great poem, but of course!
