I’m nearly fifty, I’ve been alone most of my life-
Surrounded by family, by friends, or by kids and a wife.
Years passed so quickly, I wonder just where they have gone-
And why they have left me, though crowded, still standing alone.

Alone as a young man, I drifted from pillar to post-
And found myself leaving the people I cared for the most.
Choices I’ve made in my wandering have finally come home,
Past failures still haunt me, and here I am standing alone.

Alone in my sorrows, alone my decisions I’ve faced-
Alone I have lived in a fashion my name to disgrace.
I find myself weak at the times that I need to be strong-
And inward I flee, and I find myself standing alone.

Alone, life behind me, I watch as the sun’s going down-
No smile on my features, a grimace, or maybe a frown…
My mind now is haunted with memory of people I’ve known-
Alas, I forsook them, and Death finds me standing alone.

Gunslinger..
            You just put into words,(and
very well I might add), what I've been
thinking for a long time now!! Good to
  know I'm in excellent company!!!

This is a favorite, as of now..

When you get to be as old as we are you're bound to have some regrets. But life is hardly behind us. The way I figure it, the best is yet to be! Very sad poem, John, very expressive of those regrets.

You are never alone when you can express your feelings like you have in this piece.
They say truth will set you free...and with freedom, all things are possible!! Good read!!
