It was in the Free World where
all the President's men gathered
to tell him how good he was;
That they had interviewed
a thousand men and women
to check his popularity out
That not to their least surprise
they found the Gent
to be a favourite at
A full hundred percent.

The papers put forth this news
making the President was so happy;
Then a million marched
Unhappy, to the city's central square.
Speakers blared that their opinion
was, in fact, never taken
and that they were never
consulted, and the opinion poll
was neither fair nor square.

I dived into the core issue
Trying not to make of myself a fool -
Found that the reports were true,
Indeed they had asked a thousand
as suggested by the news;
Yet my private investigation,
showed a huge blot, maybe a plot
That amongst those interviewed,
there was to be found no republican.

A moment of reflection,
Needed no prediction,
As the truth hit me,
It did hit me hard,
That them Vote-mongers
Picked their most relevant votes
and
Proved us, the rest, to be fools
Playing a game that they call
The Opinion Polls Rule!

Opinion Poll suggests 30 out of 40
(add as many equal zeroes to both) are smokers,
The Tobacco industry is profiteering,
While another Poll results in a story
That 25 percent of smokers quit
'cause smoking is so disgusting!
Which of them do we believe?
Both of them are so darned true?
Yet neither of them seems to be fair.

Yes we all live in a
Mostly democratic world,
Where each is entitled to an opinion,
But is it truthful or is this a pinion?
I don’t know, I simply don't know,
Or is it I don't want to know?
Or is it I don't want to be let known?
Sometimes I think it is all a matter of
Opinion! Do I have a second choice?

Sudhir...

Again, and again I am drawn to your
work.....I enjoyed this as much as every
piece you've done!!!! I'm with you.....
opinion polls are stupid, and whose opinion
is it, anyway??? Not ours, I would guess!

       Great reading here, (as usual!!!!!)

I have to agree with you that these polls make no sense.  I guess we continue believing the ones that we want to and hope to high heaven that the others aren't.  I love how your poems stimulate my brain.

If you've never read Taylor Caldwell's "Captains and Kings" it is a must read...and a good start for anyone who has questions about government and popularity polls.

You keep cranking them out, Sudhir.  Good stuff here!

When it comes right down to it yours is the only opinion that truly matters..your head...your heart...these are what you should listen to, and these are what you use to make every real decision.

never say never

This is very timely in an election year. I do get sick of people telling me 'they' think this or 'they' think that..who are 'they' anyway! Trust your own judgement! Good one sir!

Wow Sudhir ... got me thinking here!  I prefer to just ignore what everyone else thinks and go with my heart ... 'tis better to trust one's heart than polls I think.

Great, thought-provoking poem!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Wonderful wonderful thought provoking writing Sudhir. I was captivated all the way through.
Reminds me of the little poem that the comedian Nippsy Russell used to quote:

"Pro is the opposite of con
and that is plainly seen.
If progress means to go forward
then what does congress mean?"

Take care............ethome...........

Blah! Politics, I would get involved if I thought that they didn't all just end up as puppets.
Thanks sudir for a great thought provoking poem.
Regards to you too.
