Stone Fence

An old stone fence divides the land
On one side woods, the other field
A farmer long ago had cleared
His rocky track that wouldn’t yield

He placed the large rocks carefully
To mark his lot as best he could
Between the field and neighbor’s woods
And made a fence that since has stood

He never thought that in the future
Toiled hours to clear the land
Would bring to us a thing of wonder
Wrought of nature, made by hand

A simple fence of granite rock
Between the woods and meadow’s green
Adds dimension to the landscape
Grace and beauty, calm serene

A meadow laced with daisies now
The lovliest sight I’ve ever known
No canvas could contain this beauty
Framed by woods and granite stone

So lovely is the piled stone fence
Along it’s edge I slowly plod
And pondering its ageless charm
I think it was put here by God

Liz,
you wrote about something so special to me here...
where I live in MO..
there are 1000's of these walls...
there is one rural area about 50 miles from here that has been made a national landmark for its stone walls...
some dating back to times when Indian tribes were settlers here and many are traced back to slavery days...built to mark propety lines of old historic plantations...
they hold such mystery and history...
how they still stand long after the farms and plantations are gone...
I have spent many wondeful hours walking some of them...
thank you for bringing back those lovely
memories.
take care sweet poet

Liz; This is wonderful imagery! I could see it perfectly in my minds eye. Beautiful writing, as usual. Love, Ellie

calling them to join

Elizabeth, I believe that your talent is infinite this was a wonderful tranquil poem, it reminded me of the stone fences that can be found in the remote parts of my fair country. You have captured their beauty and grace perfectly.

Wonderful word pictures you paint with Elizabeth. An excellent read. I could feel your closeness to this old stone fence and the surrounding scene....Take care.....ethome...

Elizabeth,

I love this one!!!  That fence will outlast all and for good reason.  Great writing.
