Who Was Their Muse?

It is quite troubling this thing called muse
This essence of a mind who does bemuse
It seems that poets often cannot name
The source from where the inspiration came

Who was this seaman who would resurrect
His fallen Captain dead upon the deck?
Whose words of wisdom help decide our days
As we still tend to choose less traveled ways?

Who wrote the words that ripple waves of shock
About the dangers of Pandora's box?
What raven would so captivate our soul
That every midnight knock still rings his toll?

Who was the muse of Whitman or of Poe?
Did any of them really want to know?
Whose words came flowing out their poet pen?
It’s just the intellect of these great men

There was no muse for likes of these, you say
They simply were the poets of the day
But just as tulips rise from out the sod
Their words poured forth from out the hand of God

Elizabeth,
Allot of wisdom in your words.
About the wisest I've ever heard.
It made me think and brought a coup
And that turned my thoughts to you.

Elizabeth, I would ask you to quit being so eloquently elegant, but then I'd receive hate-mail.

Terrific!

E,

I like the structure of this piece ... Wrapped around a most interesting question of inspirations ... I'm often asked where does my poetry come from ... Easier asked than answered ... Thanks.

I am not saying I am a great writer but any talent I have comes from the hand of God as a blessing from him and by his grace.   Loved your thoughts Elizabeth...James

So wonderfully written Liz, I am not sure where us mere mortals get our inspiration but yours is definitely from the heavens.

Very good, Liz! I like this idea of the words coming from God.

i don't know where my Muse comes from
but sometimes, it's not funny.....
i try to laugh and yet somehow the laughter steals my money....
invested in the things i hold so dear to me and treasured....
your words ring true, my poet friend!
your words are double measured....

i'd hate to jar pandora's box,
'twould only stir the fire...
i do believe your poem is FINE!!!
and full of deep inspire.

thank you for a wonderful read.... and for letting me spill some verse out....
