Those Few Words

I got up from my chair and walked towards the front
I was just going to offer wishes of love
But as I drew closer I struggled to hide
The tears that were welling up in my eyes

As you hugged me and I said those few words
I felt as if my heart would burst
I cant explain how sad it was
Knowing me, you would never love

  I thought of the times when you were there
  And how I acted like I didn't care
  But I want you to know as you go through life
  That I did think of you as every day went by

I wish now more than ever that I would have been
The friend that you truly needed back then
But I let people push me and my pride did prevail
And I wasn't a true friend,  you surely did I fail

but never again will my feelings I hide
If you ever need me I'll run to your side
Those few words I said might seem like I was playing a part
But I said them with every true feeling in my heart

So remember those words as you travel through life
I will still mean them as years do go by
  And if we never speak one word again
I want you to think of me as your best friend

Thanks for this poem. My girlfriend is French and I am English. She is in France at the moment and though she returns to England at the end of August I know she really misses France when she is away.

I fear she will retun to France for good soon and this would be devastating to me.
I would hate for her to leave and regret the way I treated her or not told her how I felt

This is wonderful! The ending made me sob though......I have a friend that I heard almost these words from and he is my best friend and I love and miss him every day.-SEA
