my love is but a tender beating of my heart
so still, yet insistent, though reposed...
my love is a mystery to me
not the choice I would suppose...
an echo in a canyon
like my soul
empty cries,
my love whispers
love to me
in pain,
he whispers,
"why?"

why my heart do you torture yourself so?
you know that I alone love you
I speak to you every night
you are my soul
you are my light
my pain is your pain
my joy is your life
my heart whispers to your heart
in the still of the night
in your dreams. . .
in them will I protect thee
and stop the screams. . .

why does my love lie with another?
why am i chained to this tree...
how can I now ever recover
the spark that he has lit in me?

thy love lies with another because he is not yours
this tree is a part of you, it sustains your life
one day, you will meet on that other shore
until then, he will calm your heart of strife. . .

how can I now,
save fire, spent,
ashes of the past relent,
how can I now
take step toward
a life without his troth--I scorn
reality--not for me--
I'll drink this poison
till I die
and always will I hear his words
echoed, whispered, whispered, "why?"

my heart,
step into the fire
let it cleasne thy soul
and let thy spirit aspire
to greater things, to a life of love
this is thy reality my love
to sing the song
of the gentle dove
to drink not the poison
but the wine
but thou continueth to hurt
therefore his painful. . . "why?"

yet I will love him, and willing die.

This is our response to PoetdeVine's "Square Dance" challenge.

I'd like to thank serenity for writing this with me. . . it was truly an honor. . .
