Something about this midnight hour
leaves me tense and short of breath.
Darkness descends with a heavy power
attempting to smother me to death.

Shadows move across the wall
and nothing is quite what it seems.
Innocence sleeps just down the hall
completely lost in peaceful dreams.

A tree teasingly scrapes the window
and I just pretend not to hear.
The angry wind outside does blow.
How it fills my heart with fear.

The hairs on my neck stand up straight
and my pulse quickens its pace.
I move toward the bed with an unsteady gait,
breathless as though I have just run a race.

Under the covers I slip really fast
and close my eyes extremely tight.
I'm amazed how long night time can last
and I pray for the coming of sun light...

I hear the alarm clock and so I know
that it is now safe to uncover my head.
Never again will Edger Allen Poe
be the last thing I read before going to bed.

this reminds me of the time when i was too scared to go to bed after watching scary ghost movies or reading "True Ghost Stories"

Tennessee, im impressed by the way how smooth this one flows despite the rhyme scheme...this must have been a difficult one to write but you have done it very well

LOL about the ending!!!

Thank you everyone for your wonderful replies.  I'm pretty much a midnight poet so I thought it only fitting to write a piece about midnight.
