Between a laugh and a tear...

0 posted 2000-06-30 09:13 AM

*Dedicated to the "special people" with whom I work*

"Shopping tonight" "he's looking at me"!
With a childlike shrill it's all you can say
Can't help but wonder, what do you really see?
As I see you there day after day

I've heard it said you are but a child
A little person! Sometimes even just plain dumb!
But I spend time and I know they're wrong
They are the ones with lives of little sun

You have hopes and fears and dreams, I know
Held tight inside they're rarely seen
You go about your life, little fuss or show
But deep inside not quite as you seem

You see and hear and take all in
Your understood, you make it clear
If you're asked why you just smile, maybe grin
Or sometimes I see you fight back a tear

To walk your mile upon this earth
I doubt that they would be so brave
Day after day you show your worth
Who are we really trying to save ?

God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know it's me. ~Unknown

This is really sweet, a great tribute.  I know somebody like this, I'm thinking of sending this poem to him if you don't mind.  It annoys me that everyone ignores these people, when really, they are the ones who need and deserve all the attention they can get.  Lovely poem, thanks for sharing it.

The tragedy of it is that nobody sees the look of desperation on my face. Thousands and thousands of us, and we're passing one another without a look of recognition.

Great poem
I know what you mean I sometimes have to work with the elderley some of which have dementia and alot of poeple ignore them saying "oh they don't know what your saying" but sometimes I do wonder and even if they don't know what we say to them they still deserve compassion and companionship and a little understanding.
Great message

Eagle*  This is a wonderful POEM   The special people I have met through the years have proven to be the ones with the biggest hearts and the ones that give and can be given unconditional love without fear....what could be more beautiful than that? Those special people show you much more about the beauties of the world than anyone else could, you are so lucky to work with people like this and have them touch your life the way they do....true angles on earth!!
And J.M. is right.....my POET friend!!!
