That Far Away Place

It was too long and hilly, the ribbon of road
That carried me off to a far away place
But still the tedious trek would unfold
The flatlands and towns that I used to embrace

The mountain roads gradually came to unwind
To the low country now with its slow gentle ways
And the same sandy soil and the same scent of pine
Were like photographs out of those long ago days

The straightaway blacktop led right to the town
Not far from the beautiful Ashley, that flows
Beside the plantation, in her sparkling gown
And into the past my sweet memory goes

For this is the place where I came in my youth
I remember the house and the pond in the grove
The closer I came to admitting the truth
The faster it seems down the highway I drove

I knew I was nearing the turn off at last
Onto a dirt road and then round a small curve
My heart started pounding remembering that day
And my mind was entranced as the car took a swerve

How would I be seen after all of these years
Like a loved one's homecoming, welcome and warm
Or more like a stranger trying to mend
Years of a relationship, forgotten and worn

There is the road, I remember it well
The curve up ahead, now I pull to the side
And as I get out of the car I can see
Someone quickly peer through the curtain inside

My feet are like lead on the dry sandy road
Will I have to walk up and stand at the door
Or will I be greeted midway with a kiss
And warming embrace as we used to before

Before I step forward, I stare at the ground
And all the good memories swirl through my mind
But a voice interrupts and says, is it you
Who sent him that letter, so lovely and kind

He was holding that letter the day that he died
He said she was coming from out of his youth
I never believed him, all of these years
And now I can see he was telling the truth

Liz, this is going straight into my library. A wonderful poem, that needs more time to be appreciated than what I have given it. Look forward to reading this again at my leisure. beautiful.
