Listening to every heart

1968

Sixteen, once kissed,
and summer time
memories
string by in flight
when summer’s long night
brings on the wind
the smell of sun’s burn and
baby oil…

remembering back on the day,
hot concrete beneath my feet
so I ran to shade
under cool, cool trees
and long, languid breeze
off the sea

blocks away.

LA in summer
back to visit,
but place of my birth.

Traded the concrete for earth.

Rebirth.

Only in memory do I look back
and hear the strain
of the refrain

“Under the Boardwalk
down by the sea
on a blanket with my baby
is where I’ll be”

and knowing it wouldn’t happen
but remember wishing I was older
so it could
if it would

because I was sixteen.

Ah, memories.

Karilea,
memories do follow us around, don't they??
you just gave your age away, by the way...

Sudhir, you are so right, and I have no problem giving away my age...I've done it before, I'll do it again...I've lived long enough to be proud enough to say I've survived these 48 years!!!  LOL

And Jeremiah, you can pick any part of the poem you like, and point out what you don't like, anytime!  I'll go so far as to say I would like you to pick out a different icon...but to each, their own.  Thanks for your comments...

Wonderful poem.   Nice to see that memories are can hold to a soul.  What would we be without them and where would we be?  As for the age;  I am right behind you baby!!!

I was a few years older than you but I remember it well too! Oh, what great times they were. It was a privilege to live then, many exciting things were happening and it was safe to hold your girlfriend's hand and walk down any street. Some things have changed for the better but many many things have'nt. It was great to read your words Sunshine, I really enjoyed them.

Sunshine, I really like this. It sets a mood that transports the reader back to another world, complete with music playing in the background. Very nice.........

Wow, surrounded by youth and wisdom...how lucky can I be?  Thank you both, Mark and ethome, for reading.

'Deer...just one day that I've always been able to recall vividly in my mind...hormones must have been raging!!!  Thanks, 'Deer!
