The Turning Point It poured the day the brightest died, a summer soggy spirit drowned gray caissons sunk to axle depth, before our manly tears had dried. Apt recompense from fates that frowned on Lee, his promise hence unkept to gold and gray, the mission's goal, Virginia muck had sucked to earth as Abner to king Saul's right hand. As steady rain soaked to the soul the living dead, despair gave birth to anxious dread that swept a land where yesterday rang guarantees. Drooped hat brims dripped on sodden chests that paid respects to Lionheart, their last salute, the warranties in blood of honorees' behests. The fallen spells his warrior's art. The rifles spoke an ordered word, a language of their own, "Adieu, good knight, rest well, one day we greet a land where men at war, absurd."
