Fishstory Down along the coastal road, one block from the briny sea, rusting like gigantic tins, untidy rows of canneries. The lighthouse doesn’t stand tall packed between two fisheries, but there were profits to be made processing fish in factories. Sardine oil left town by rail, with fishmeal by the ton, new notions of conservation wealthy capitalists did shun. When the nineteen forties came, their numbers down to none, the legendary Cannery Row had caught its final run. Yet, its folklore cast its lure, nostalgia draws the swarms, over-fishing is still in style, not heeding what history warns. © 2000 Corinne Bailey [This message has been edited by Corinne (edited 06-18-2000).] |
