Wet with Goodbye

The carriageman's cloak,
flying over the back board,
whips wild in the wet of the wind

and I, sir, and you,
cannot help but draw closer
'gainst the chill of the darkening bend

Our shoulders together
As thunder cracks hard and
crawls slow 'cross the grey, lowering sky,

this night we move over
the moist layered land
under trees laden wet with goodbye

For our journey has brought us
once again to part ways
and to station, to station we fly

Through the heavy green hills
soaked and soiled, rock to earth,
'long roadside and on toward shore

it is heaviest here,
in my heart, dearest one
and for you I will long, evermore

~ Claire

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again...
might not pass for Rebecca... so will have to opt for Heathcliff...
in case it wasn't evident...   I love the gothic tone of this piece...  absolutely exquisite beauty wrapped in a haunting sorrow.

"Trees laden wet with goodbye"--how descriptive, Claire. Well done.

Mike, somehow I have an easier time of it seeing you as Heathcliff than as Rebecca...go figure, eh? Thank you for the gracious commentary. I was reviewing some photographs of Ireland when I became inspired to write this piece.

Netswan, thank you very much. That's rather what I was thinking while writing it.

Elizabeth, thank you, as well, for the "well done"...you are so kind.

Claire, this was one of the most wonderful pieces of poetry I have read in a long time. And I have read alot of great poetry lately. But WOW, what a piece of work! WOW what a piece of art. I loved the mournful, haunted tone of this...as Mike so aptly put..gothic...
divine writing m'dear...

Claire,
I simply LOVE the way you write. This reminded me of the moors, and of the Irish potato-plight. That may sound silly and far from the true meaning, but this is where my head went   I haven't been around of late to read your recent stuff but I'll try to catch up dear

Mike, you flatter me, my friend.

Sven, thank you. It feels good to be "back"... I'm glad you enjoyed this one.

X Angel, for such an enthusiastic commentary, I must thank you, in earnest. As for the gothic tone, thanks. It could be, though, that I'm just old.

LadySofia, not silly whatsoever. Matter of fact, the moors of Ireland are what inspired this piece. (That, and my aching heart, but that's an old story...  )  Thank you so much for taking time to read and respond to this...I've not been "around" lately either...and am awfully glad to be back. Take care,

~ Claire

I was lost in the picture you painted and the words were gone, only the feel that you brought was listened and real.  Wonderful Claire, so glad to see you!!

Wow meadowmuse it's been a long time since I've read one of your works, and it is always refreshing to feel movement and rhythm in poesy. Not ever one poem of yours have I read ever lacked this flow.
