Waterfalls come tumbling out of the sky,
But their voices are muted,
Silent water against stones.
The music of the piano is the music of stones.

I can smell the sap and the breeze in trees.
I can hear the rocks pushed aside by feet.
Kicked tumbling into leaves.
The music of reprieve.

Add in the slow rumble of the bass,
The patter and click and thud of the drums,
The architectural domain of the guitar,
The flute pressing wind into song.

The trumpet brassy and low and full,
The oboe lower and deep-toned.
The grass and sky and mountain peaks
Are music of their own.

On pressed discs the magic blooms
And takes my voice away from me.
Takes my emotions into the trees.
Takes me away from here to the sea.

Spreading wonder all through me.
Voices added to the symphony,
The cacophony of melody
And lonely serenity.

Eyes tight shut and mouth throwing out
Notes I can't even reach or shout.
Broken finally by the power of the words
In the songs releasing notes of warmth.

Solace loses her crown in the ground
And sits alone by the grave she made
With her own hands: see the mud
And the trickle of blood on the ground.

Look at the graven images of words
And the songs and fell patter of stone
Against stone against stone over bone,
Far away cold beneath lies home.

Watch the westerly sun give to the easterly moon.
See her shadows grow and tangle in the brush.
Listen to the beautiful ache of her sobbing voice.
Until dawn comes again with the beating of the thrush.

The music pushes it all through like blood
But warmer, more red and more like mud.

All through you. Don't even speak.
Don't even whisper. Don't even sleep.
Don't even think. Don't even move.
Don't even turn your hand in the groove.

And then it ends,
The catalogued rise and closing decay of man
In celebratory phrases and notes bespeaking the land.
The slow setting sky over our unsettled hands.

wow...you went for it in this...
the imagery is amazing and the rhyme
makes me giddy
and the way this build and builds up like
crescendo is perfect ...

It's amazing
How you make your face just like a wall
How you take your heart and turn it off
How I turn my head and you lose it all ...
And it's unnerving
(How one move just puts me by myself)
There you go just trusting someone else
(Now I know I put us both through hell) ...
I'm not sayin
That there was nothing wrong
(I just didn't think you'd ever get tired of me)
And I'm not sayin
(We ever had the right to hold on)
(I just didn't wanna let you get away from me)

She says baby,
It's 3AM ... I must be lonely,
When she says baby,
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes,
Says the rains gonna wash away I believe it.

J.M./B.S.,
Here, I'll pare it down mighty quickly. Nature, music, loss, decay, beauty. Intertwined. Repeat.

shaking my head again, in awe (and total jealousy)  just recently tried to capture this same theme--after reading yours, I'm glad that one hit the fire...(and don't go chastising me about that in an e mail--it WAS bad, I tell ya...)  saving this one, me likes very much...

S'en,
Don't worry, no chastising you'll get from me. In fact, I was just rereading a whole bunch of old short stories I wrote, and chucked about a third of 'em. I don't mind revision, some of this stuff is BEYOND reworkable. Anyway, thanks for having the patience to read this poem. Glad you enjoyed.

Mike, even though I'm an Ivory Girl, I enjoyed this piece...
