~*PRISONER*~ At day's end, with body starved and overexercised, a victim, uncherished, just for a small taste of beauty, it cries a hollow moan for nourishment...for love in haste, she indulges, devouring her enemy, the need to fill the void, to drown the emptiness that lives within, her stomach, now full of shame, and disgust for giving into the monster - the hunger that haunts her, her stomach is full, ready to explode, once again, she succombs to the disease, bending over the porcelain goddess, she bursts, everything painful inside her forcefully dances out, mocking her, laughing, whispering in echoes "no man will ever love you if you're fat," every emotion pulses through her veins, fear, rage, triumph, failure, sorrow, determination, she thinks that she is riding herself of all the ugliness, loneliness and frustration inside, but, it only leaves her feeling more empty, more ugly, more alone, grasping a beauty magazine in her hands, models gracing the cover, flawless, adored by men, she weeps endless tears for what will never be, too young to feel this battered, plain, angry and hopeless, still, she is a prisoner of society, unloved, a prisoner of anorexia and bulemia, a prisoner of herself *By Melissa Honeybee* [This message has been edited by Melissa Honeybee (edited 06-16-2000).] |

What a moving piece.. "no man will ever love you if you're fat" Terrible that these simple words of the english language can bring someone to do this to themselves. You have described the thinking and actions of many people in today's world perfectly. Great Work!! |

Melissa, You've said a mouthful.....oops, poor choice of expression. Allow me to start over. Society places unrealistic demands on women to satify it's own agenda, keeping women subjugated and enslaved. More women need to speak out to break this chain and stop this madness. I appreciate your thoughtful writing on this ignored subject matter. Well done! Dennis :^) |

Brian - Thank you, I can always count on you to read my poetry, you've always been a big support! It was your poem, "Candy Heart" that inspired me, afterall. O' Brian my muse!  Dennis - Thank you for your reply and I totally agree with you! On some levels, eating disorders is an ignored subject, but, it is a very dark, and painful subject to think about, so I can understand why people try to avoid discussing it, especially if it hits home James - Thanks! Isn't it a shame that people, women especially go to such great lengths to become beautiful |

This is wonderful writing and over a very serious issue. Excellent message! Bullemia and Anorexia are both death threatening diseases. I have no idea how these ultra thin, unhealthy, shapeless models, ever became the vogue. Almost every man I know, likes women with meat on their bones. ~netswan |

Thank you Netswan! Most of my guy friends say that they too lke women with meat on their bones, and yet, time and time again, myself and other women feel that they have to starve themselves for attention or love just because runway models, movie stars and porn stars exist (example: Pamela Anderson Lee, whom I like to call the living barbie doll, she's Canadian, but her body was bought in the States) - all too often we compare ourselves to these supposed "role models" when we already are beautiful to begin with Take care, Melissa Honeybee |

Melissa : Such a powerful and emotional topic for so many people. It's a shame what society has done to so many. Placed such unrealistic ideals where so many have become victims in beleiving that they only way they'll ever be of any worth is if they fit the image that society has placed on them. Melissa~ I agree with you, this is so very serious. You did a great job writting about this. I happen to have an hour glass shape, and sometimes feel huge while watching shows like 'Friends', then there are the times I just feel healthy and beautiful! Glad you posted this! -SEA |

Thank you everyone for reading this and for the support regarding this horrible disease and for understanding the obsession that society has with beauty I don't want to get too personal about my poem, but, even I have "punished myself" just to become beautiful like the waif supermodels. I wanted to write a poem such as this to make men or even women who haven't suffered from an eating disorder to understand in blunt details how devastating it really isTake care, Melissa Honeybee |

It is truly a very important issue, you have picked up Melissa, and very well illustrated with your beautiful, strong poem too.. But there are many sides to the story...and many views... Obesity (I am sorry for the blunt of this term) in men or women is a disease that is not always (mostly not) a result of over-eating. Being healthy is definitely not being fat (sorry again). And nobody likes skinny men or women....thats for sure... Secondly, this is more of a competition and a trend set by women with women themselves, I feel. So it is quite a wrong presumption to think that men demand their counterparts to be skinny etc... I repeat again, no one, neither man nor woman likes a skinny person...it is the perception of some extreme feeminists that might have led to this belief or some stupid actor (or actress) that aired this view and became a trend as many things like shampoos for instance become... again I may be wrong, but I certainly do not feel that being healthy or fat or even skinny/slim (if that person is not killing him or herself by not eating etc) is bad for a person...The beauty lies in the inside of the heart and that is where relations start and end... Facial and physical beauty is only a deception, a misguided notion... ........sorry to have opened my mouth, I have a tendency to blah blah a lot... back to the poem now, I found this a very good poem highlighting the exact nature of this 'disease' or set of them...and the problem has to be addressed, this is true... regards and take care, Sudhir |

Touching and sad....I had a friend in high school that suffered from this....she was so beautiful bu tit was how she saw herswlf that was destroying,,,,this has made me think of her and wonder how she is doing,,,Thank you for sharing,,,,, Julie :) |

Keep shouting and fighting, Melissa!! Let the world know that skin and bones doesn't equal beauty. Thank you for bringing this extremely important issue up....if it prevents just one girl from becoming anorexic or bulimic it has served a great purpose.
