The roar of the crowd
drowns out the cries
of the vendors
peddling popcorn
peanuts
and soft-pretzels...

The quick crack of a bat
brings back old memories
of barn lot
pick-up games..
of being the littlest kid..
of being picked last...
and of good times
when the games started...

As the players make their way
around the bases
I catch my mind wandering
back to those simpler times...
when the worst thing in the world
was an error...and the best thing
was a clean fast double play with
one away and runners at
first and third.

I look  at the crowd around me...

I see fathers and sons,
mothers and daughters,
grandsons and grandfathers...
and I realize how important this game
really used to be.....

Oh Yes!
I remember BaseBall!
I got to sit up in the
announcers booth while
my uncle and his team
played. Wow....that
place spawned many a
story, poems, jokes,
laughs...
in the background
while that wonderful
game went on out in
front of me on the
field!
Thanks for the read...
and for stirring up
memories!!

Chris:

A very nostalgic poem!  Well written and an excellent point at the end.  It's true that in many ways professional baseball has lost it's seriousness and innocence. Instead of the old days, when baseball was played "for the love of the game," it is now more "for the love of the money and fame."  I'm only 21, but even I realize this fact.  I love this poem because I absolutely love baseball, watching it on TV or going to home games at the skydome in Toronto.  Toronto Blue Jays #1, Shawn Green is still the best, most talented baseball player ever (and it sure doesn't hurt that he has a nice butt in that uniform - *evil grin,* sorry I'm a woman, I notice these things, I just had to say it)     Thanks for the read. Do you have a fav. team and/or player?

Take care,
Melissa Honeybee

Thanks for the responses Magnolia and honey-Bee..

and yes I have a fav team and player...
(LaRue County Youth Team) CUBS...
and my favorite player is my nephew ZACK..
If you ever get tired of watching the same old ball game played by over-payed, over-drugged, over-appreciated college drop-outs..(not all are but most)  just drop by the local parks and recreation center and watch our local youth battle it out and give it their all for nothing more than the thrill and the sounds and the excitement and love that truly is baseball....
(sorry to come down on pro-sports like this but I just can't believe what this game has come to over the last several years...)

WOW, have you ever captured the moment and packed it full of a personal message. Sometimes everyone is so wrapped up in contracts, salaries, and player trades that they forget the real sprit of the game or what it used to be anyway. Nice one Chris
