Our High School Years

As I walk through the doors in a scary new school,
I try to act grown up, confidant, cool.
If the other kids only knew how scared I was inside,
they'd laugh, ridicule, and criticize.

As I look around for fimiliar faces,
I find no one, and no empty spaces.
The bell rings my heart skips a beat,
I take a step forward but I can't move my feet.

I find my class and a friend of mine,
I take a breath and say to myself everything will be fine.
The day comes to an end, things wern't that bad.
I look back and forget about why I was so sad.

Two years goes by I'm in 11th grade,
I'm thinking about my car, my boyfriend, and the next time I get paid.
When I think about life I think of my friends this year,
never once thinking about my future, my career.

Another year goes by it's my senior year,
I start to think about my future and I'm filled with fear.
I start studying and doing good on my tests,
trying hard to finish my homework and do my best.

Getting my report card seeing how I was affected,
thinking about my college and hoping I was accepted.
Why didn't I think my early years,
and took my mind off my tempting peers.

It's time to graduate tears running down my face,
thinking about my childhood, rushing it like a race.
What happened to my petty fears,
my pigtails, bruises, my teddybears.

As I walk up the stairs I look out to my friends,
and faking a smile I know this is the end.
I accept my diploma with tears in my eyes,
and realize we had the time of our lives.

Welcome to Passions! very very well done. i didn't even know that this was your first post until i read the replies. this was quite an entrance. and i hope i'm not as teary eyed when i reach for my diploma next year (but i probably will be!).
well done. i like the rhythm in this one. you have conveyed the feelings of nostalgia that one gets about high school very well. and i hope you enjoy your stay here at Passions.

It's a great poem.  I am going to be a senior this year and am starting to feel the feelings you felt.  Where to go, what to do?  I love the poem though.  It really makes me think.

Very moving firt post. I never had the joy of some of the things you described ( I attended High School in Germany and things are different there), but you described the whole experience so well that I could picture myself dealing with what you had to deal with.

Greta work, can't wait to see more!

I agree with you, that we all take our youth for granted, and then wonder where it went. This is an amazing poem! Every one I read today seems to hit right at home with me. Good job.

That the promise
Keeps me here

All the colors
Disappear
