With you it was all or nothing,
There was no middle ground.
If we couldn’t be always having sex,
You didn’t want me hanging ‘round.

You insisted I be your lover,
A couple to the end.
You couldn’t accept me as I was,
When I wanted to be your friend.

I wanted time to let love grow,
For love to find its way.
But you refused to understand me,
You wanted it night and day.

And when I wouldn’t go along,
Your love quickly turned to hate.
You cursed me, called me evil names,
Your love just couldn’t wait.

So now you sit alone and cry,
And wonder what went wrong.
You threw away what you might have had,
It was before you all along.

It’s too late for you and me,
What we might have had is gone,
It’s sad it had to come to this,
But my life is moving on.

There’s a lesson to be learned here,
And on this you can depend,
You’ll never find the love you seek,
Until you learn to be a friend.

Her Response:

Oh, spare me the hearts and flowers,
You must be a nerd.
It’s the sexual revolution,
But you probably haven’t heard.

Women are liberated,
We have power, we have might,
And we have sex whenever we want it,
And I want it every night.

But you have this thing about "friendship",
What kind of crap is that?
If I feel the need for "friendship"
I’ll buy a dog or cat.

I want a passionate lover,
Who’ll turn me inside out.
Not some wimp who’s probably gay,
Who goes off somewhere to pout.

I love’em and I leave’em,
Like they all did me before.
I’m just getting even,
When they treated me like a whore.

Yeah, we might have made it,
I guess we’ll never know.
While I was running fast and free,
You were running slow.

So you go find a "nice girl",
And stay with her till the end.
But I’ll keep your number handy,
In case I ever need a friend.

And when my life is over,
And I’m finally laid to rest,
I’ll leave a note to tell my lovers,
That of all, you were the best.

Because you were my friend.

Great Marv!  It's too bad some women don't realize what they have until it's too late. I take whatever I can get and trying to learn to be happy with it.     Loved seeing both sides of it.

I wanted time to let love grow,
For love to find its way.

I really think this way also and friendship leads to more permanency... *s

I had to mull this one around a bit.... It would be easy to say that the woman is at fault for denying herself more substantial feelings than lust.. but what about him? Isn't there friendship AND fire when love's involved? hmmmmmm... alot to think about..(of course, coming from a hopeless and unrealistic romantic  ).  Great write, as always.

I loved this hardrock.

What makes it so impressive for me is the ability to see both sides, and I liked the twist at the end.

I am off to pout in a corner now.

Hey, good to see you here! This was fun, looking at it from both sides. I think I bounce from one side to the other, and neither one works..LOL

Wow!  I liked this one.  This sorta changed my view a little.  I'd always thought it was the men who were often the people of that nature, during relationships.  I never knew the sexual revolution among women had gone that far.  I always thought it was more about the rights of women.  Thankyou for this eye opener.

But I also feel for you.  I hope you do find someone who isn't just interested in sex.

Wow!!! I really liked this poem. More than I can put down into words. I liked the whole way it was made in the sense that it actually had a response. Wonderfully written! Wow........wow is all I can say.

How ironic that she realized that in the end, she still wanted a friend, and not some "built" man to treat her like a rag doll...So are the ironies of love and life.
