Daddy’s Little Angel

I was Daddy’s little Angel
The apple of his eye.
My tears could melt his great big heart
There was nothing he could deny.

He was my knight in shining armor,
There was nothing he couldn’t do.
Always making and fixing things,
With baling wire and glue.

Fixing cars and trucks and things,
A Jack-of-all-trades by name.
Tho’ I was just a little girl,
To be like him was my game.

Imitating him, at the age of five
I put my tricycle up on my swing.
Using his tools in my small hands,
In pieces when I finished, my dad’s laughter it did bring.

Why did God take him away from us,
When still so young was he?
Surely it was not his time to go,
I thought, forever he would be.

“God, please don’t take him now,” I cried,
“Surely you are mistaken.”
So much I need to tell him,
I wasn’t ready for him to be taken.

I miss my daddy so,
Some days I start to say,
“Daddy, fix this,” and then remember
……he has gone away.

Our last weekend was spent together
I sat, my head upon his knee,
He had to know his time was short,
He said he was proud of me.

He told me how I gave HIM life,
And how I made him smile.
And then he wound my hair in his work-scarred hands,
And we were quiet for a while.

Destined never to see his great-grandchildren
They never saw his smiling face.
God called him home and a void was made,
But he sent another to take his place.

He resides there now in heaven,
His skills, God needed there.
Why else would He take him,
When it’s so hard for me to bare?

As for the great-grandchildren he so much wanted,
Through my memories he’ll still be known.
For I’ve passed on to them the stories,
Of this man who made our home.

They’ll know the love he gave us,
And they’ll know the reasons why,
On certain days Grandma gets quiet,
And goes off to softly cry.

But life must go on for all of us
We know not when it will stop
And one day soon he will welcome us
Still working in Heaven’s shop.

Dream Chaser,

I, too, know the void of having your father taken at an early age. You have done a beautiful job of remembering him in this work.  Thank you for reminding me how special the time I had with my own father was.

Yes, fractal007, he was a wonderful man!  I couldn't have had a better father even if I could have chosen him.

And Sheila, the special times were so many that I could never begin to count them.

I really miss him this time of year.  He always made Christmas such a special time in our family.

So very well done. A poem that will last forever, to read down to your children and their children. To keep your father alive and always with you.
Beautiful.

Dream Chaser...  Have you ever heard a song called "Daddy's little girl"?  It is sung by a group called Dr Hook...  I lost my father when I was 2 years old - and we were closer than peas in a pod...  I followed him everywhere!  Listen to the song if you can find it...  it is an old one - but it is what keeps me going - it is sad - but it is life!  I am told every day that I am just like my dad and from what I can establish - I am...  I wish you luck and hope that you can keep the memory of your dad living on somehow!!
