Wine is just a woman to me,
Fulfilling my every need.
She brings me comfort, she brings me hope,
She approves my every deed.

She never waits alone at home,
With face ascowl and dour.
She lies encradled within my arms,
Bringing pleasure every hour.

She brings the warmth I so desire,
She takes away my pain.
She brings me shelter from the storms,
She shields me from the rain.

She brings the peace my soul doth crave,
She puts my dreams to sleep.
She makes the cries go unheard,
And my secrets she doth keep.

She gives me life, where none exists,
She dulls the screams of death.
She wipes away all memories,
Of soldier’s dying breath.

She takes away the jungle stench,
And napalm in the air.
She clouds the thoughts and images,
Of times when I was there.

So I sleep with Cracklin Rose,
Or some by other name.
And hide myself in alleyways,
So no one sees my shame.

There is no cure for what I have,
It’s burning from inside.
So I douse the flames in wine each day,
And go away to hide.

My wine’s become my woman,
We’ll never be apart.
It’s the only love that I can feel,
Within this soldier’s heart.

Hardrock--I called my husband's lover gin, so I know just what you mean...but instead of loving arms from her, he woke with a head ache...You are a wonderful poet!

Hardrock..
I've waited eons to read you again, and I'm not disappointed!    You have outclassed that atypical male sonnet of "Why beer is better than women"..lol  Great job here!! I wish I had your diversity.

hmmmmmm not sure what to say about this one.  Well first off it made me cry.   My ex-husband use to love his beer more than me and that really sux, let me tell ya.  Never and I mean NEVER substitute alcohol for the love of another person.  Cause alcohol can never give the lil hugs or the sweet, warm kisses. (okay I am done preachin now..lol)  Other than all that, it had many stories behind it, just like everyone's lives out there.  Nice thoughts and well put words tho.

Always reading you,
Mags

P.S.  Great to see your fingers typing away again.

No person is worth your tears, and the only one that is ...... will never make you cry

I think this is one of the best poems I have read on the forums.

there is just so much in it to take in.  So many implications.  I feel I know the subjects full history, and what affected me the most is it made me sit up and think of how people can end up on skid row, and the reasons why they are there.

I just have this image in my mind of a wino on the street, hiding away from the world with a permanent sadness in his eyes, memories tormenting him and the only comfort coming in the form of a bottle.  But yet this is portrayed in such an eloquent way that it makes me question the loss to the world of an intelligence...

The one thing that it doesnt say to me is that the wine has replaced a whoman's love, more the fact that because of what the subject has been through, there is no woman that could understand.  It is almost a fear of integration.

I love it as a work because it has forced me to think and alter my perceptions.  Thankyou.

I understand, I relate and I grieve with you!  I myself have turned to "wine" at times to numb the pain of reality.  I have a friend right now who is desperately seeking her refuge in alcohol and she wants so badly not too, but can't stop.    Thanks for having the courage to write about it so vividly, HONESTLY,  and with such transparency!  Great poem about the "real" demons in life!  Hugs to you!

i was also reminded of a man on the street,  but a man that people may look at with loathing and pity, without ever trying to understand the situations of his life that had brought him to that point. this was a great portrayal of the reasons that no one cares to see.

Makes me think of brokenhearted men comming back from war after all they've seen and lived through... must be so difficult to deal with that kind of pain, no wonder some would turn to alcohol to escape reality. Maybe there are some cases when loved ones and friends can't really help you.
Great poem, made me think...

Hey there, found this floating about. Another HR gem! Where you been lately, my friend?
This is sad, you know. I hope you aren't really feeling like this.
