beautiful child
with big ears and funny teeth
sleep sweet tonight
in the junkyard
that houses parts from 87 cars
(all chrysler, of course)

ignore the sounds
of your mother
cracking your father's back
your sister's demanding voice
your brother's suicide threats

sleep sweetly
and listen to the new baby breathe

Disturbing images here but even so, the frail lights of love and hope shine through.
Beautifully written

thank you ron and isis for your comments. they are much appreciated
several years ago, i dated a guy who was horrible in every way.  he had no ambition in life, and neither did anyone in his family, except for his youngest sister. the last time i was home, i ran into her. she graduates high school this year, and i miss her very much. this was for her, with hopes that she can overcome the environment she has been raised in and grow to become the beautiful young woman i know she can be.

If you can feel that staying human is worthwhile, even when it can't have any result whatever, you've beaten them.
