Have you ever killed someone,
While looking into their eyes?
Or heard their mournful pleadings,
Or heard their final cries?

Have you ever smelled the stench of death,
Swirling round your head?
Or felt the passage of a soul,
At that moment when they’re dead?

Have you ever felt the sticky wet,
Of blood across your hands?
Or watched the fluid of life stream out,
Making rivulets in the sands.

Have you ever touched a body,
With skin so icy cold?
Or watched the dying of a child,
While lesser beings grow old?

Have you ever wondered what it’s like,
To take a human life?
Or wondered how you live inside,
When you cause such strife?

Well, you don’t have wonder,
Just call me up some day.
I’ll tell you all about it,
And why I am this way.

I’ll tell you how it feels to kill,
And what it does inside.
And how you have to live with it,
And why your soul can’t hide.

I’ll tell you how I died with each,
And where I left my heart.
And why I choose to live alone,
Distant and apart.

I’ll tell you of the nightmares,
That haunt my every hour.
And why there’s no good life for me,
And why my soul is sour.

And when I’m finished talking,
I think you’ll plainly see.
That killings not the easy thing,
You watch on your TV.

My country made me do it,
But I have paid the price.
And I may have to kill again,
Never stopping to think twice.

I’ll do it if I have to,
So you won’t have to know
The hell it puts your mind through,
And so you won’t have to go.

I’m a universal soldier,
Doing as I’m told.
But I can’t forget that dying child,
While lesser beings grow old.

I live with tears and sadness,
A hollow man inside.
I live next door beside you,
But I never live inside.

My life was left on battlefields,
My heart was lost in war.
So I’ll hide myself behind these walls,
And hope to kill no more.

War is such a horrid thing,
And it leaves your soul bereft.
It’s never about who’s right or wrong,
It’s only about who’s left.

You never cease to amaze me...This piece draws you right in... The gradual realization of what appears to be cold blood..to war.. is great.. Although, I don't envy these memories.. Great job!

Gasp, powerful, sad, lonely...Stop that!  Don't go making me cry..
Take care.

I have an incredible amount of respect for you...thank you.  It is men like you who have risked their lives for this country..if only people could give men like you the respect you deserve....In World War II you would have come home to a loving country with banners and patriotic songs and cheers...but you came home to a country full of protesters and the screaming taunts "Baby Killer" and draft dodging pot heads.  That must have been so hard....Well, I Thank You, for going when your country called, for your bravery.  God Bless you.

My friend i think this is the greatest piece you have ever wrote. A masterpiece Hardrock. There won't any here in my heart and soul that will top this one for awhile. I love to read your work and i'm really glad i read this one.

I'm a dying romantic and when i can no longer write i can no longer live -Jeremiah Johnson-

My dear friend

How long it has been, and how much you have suffered.  My heart goes out to you, my cries for your pain - one I can never understand.  Keep writing, if only to know we're here.

God bless my friend

THIS WAS INCREDIBLE.....I had to literally catch my breath about 2/3 of the way through.  Thank you so much for letting the everyday American,  who did not go to the battle field for our freedom, see just what those that did experienced.  We are not as appreciative as we should be of our soldiers, and have taken them for granted.  I felt like this poem needed to be shouted from the roof tops for it's truthful message that was conveyed with such realism and pain.    Thank you once again for sharing your poetry, heart and life with us!
