it was war

so i hid from the dying
from the dead
from the eyes of those whose tragic countenances
said they could not allow their guns
to shoot any further than my own

i was unarmed

i sobbed when i felt fear begin to disperse
shrapnel from every child's weapon
into every other child's now fresh corpse

it was war

so when the slideshow offered armistice
i ran to find my white flag

i learned the chants
the words i could never believe
i dismissed everything dear
and fell at the feet of those i despised
singing their praises

though every taste became bitter
every truth redefined
every breath heavy
every sense suffocated
every light dimmed

it was peace

this is from a dream i had a while ago... i never have violent dreams, but here i was sitting in the middle of a war, with very young soldiers all around me, and all i could do was hide and watch, because i had no weapon of my own. and then we were in peace talks, but it was shown as a slideshow. such an odd dream...
