Please read this before going further!
I am posting this poem at the request of a dear
friend who read my original draft. It is about
a subject that no one really discusses. It is
about child abuse. This focuses on child neglect
which is abuse without the physical bruises, but
leaves lasting scars, just the same. I urge you,
if you know of a neglected child, try to get the
parents or parent to seek help. You might just be
saving a little one's life, all the way into
  adulthood.
                   Thank You!

Why couldn't you just love me?
I did my level best..
Worked twice as hard to prove myself..
Much harder than the rest..
I tried to be your perfect child..
A perfect little clone..
But you made sure I grew up,
Feeling perfectly alone....

My sisters and my brother..
Always had a special spot..
The oldest, or the youngest,
or the prettiest I was not..
Life stuck me in the middle..
Where I could not reach for you..
You saw it, but you pulled your hand away
       and I fell through....

So many times I've cried out loud..
And even though I'm grown..
When I think back to childhood days..
I still feel so alone..
You'll never know and never see
       the damage from my youth..
A child rejected IS neglected..
       That is child abuse!!

No, you never broke my bones..
You usually let me eat..
But hand me downs were all you'd give..
From head down to my feet..
You made me walk to school when I
       was really very sick..
I never told a soul,
If you found out, I'd get the stick....

I never asked you for your help..
You wouldn't have, anyway..
And even though you're getting old,
can't ask you to this day..
I really missed belonging to some
        folks who loved each other..
And all these years, I've wished for
        just a caring, loving Mother....

I know that I can't change the past,
or go back to that time..
And well I know that in that age,
        neglect was not a crime..
To use a child to vent the hate,
        just has no sane excuse..
It's time to join together..
We can stop this child abuse....

Once again, I thank you for reading this.
Please do your part if you see a child in
      need.......there are many agencies to
      help in this cause.
                  Thank you......

Hi Kethry....

Yes, you are right.....we do just smother our feelings about this. I did, for about 30 years. The pain doesn't go away until we face it. If you have experienced these things, than I wish you the peace I am beginning to find in helping other little ones in whatever way I can. Maybe we can ease their suffering.
         Thank you for understanding this!

Oh Sunny, what a sad tale, if only it wasn't so frequent. I wish all little children would have the love they deserve. I'm sorry you had to feel this pain. Beautiful writing, in spite of the sad topic.
Peace.
Sandra

I enjoyed reading it. My mom was sorta like that too...only it was emotional and physical abuse for me...

This “disease” of child abuse casts a long, dark cloud upon the faces of our future.  I’m not a parent (far from), but I prey I’ll never understand what could drive someone to abuse, or in this case, neglect a child, their child.  My parents separated when I was about 10, my father was abusive, luckily my mom was smart enough to leave when she did, as a result, I never knew it first hand.  But I have had friends that have been so badly abused, to the point of surrender.  Personally, I’d rather die than see any child of mine suffer unnecessarily.
I’m sorry for your experience.  Your poem is a reminder to how far we still must go. And for that, I thank you.

To all of you friend who have read
     this poem so far.......

I would just like to say thank
you and bless you, as your eyes are
open and you care. This was a personal
experience, but I am beginning to see
     the tremendous suffering of countless
others who just don't know how to
express it.  If you need to talk to me
     I am always available....it sometimes
helps to share....I know it did for
me. I have a willing ear!

           Once again thank you....maybe
we can make a difference, after all!

We can make a difference, each one of us personally.  If you see of, or KNOW of such a situation it is up to you to do something about it, you may only be saving them from a beating, but you could be saving their lives too..
I feel sorry for anychild who must live or has lived this way, children (bless their hearts) need to be sheltered and nutured, not know a life of fear, mistrust, lonliness and loathing.
Together and with this poem as a reminder we can make a diffence, at least in our corner of the world!!!!!!

Wonderful work Sunny, I salute you hon!!

Hello Isis....

I do so appreciate your reply to this poem. I am sincerely hoping that it will help someone, as it did help me to write it. It is my own story, and it has taken me years to write....years of denial and self-abuse because I thought I was to blame.  Only recently did new facts come to light, and some hands reached out to pull me up out of the pit. I am here to offer my hand to anyone that has gone through this experience, or just needs to hold onto another human being. I know how much that can mean in a dark time. You are not alone!!!
