I saw the winter
wash away the spring
as flowers faded into grey
and oceans of snow
covered barren fields
as black trees freeze
in the light of day

the city street
lined with snow
is clouded with fog
in the pale light of dawn
as sleepers wake under heavy blankets
and the weary beggar wanders on...

I thought you might like a taste of Winter in the middle of the Summer's nastiness. I know I needed it.

Indeed, this is a very refreshing break from the summer heat. Winter is my favorite time of the year, and I love your image of a snowy street blanketed in fog.

Ian, what a great idea!! I sure need a reprieve from this NH heat, and humidity...You helped me create a wonderful image through your writing!!

Summer? What summer? Summer forgot about Germany this year
Your ode to the winter is excellent, though, and it has made me remember how yucky winter really is. Though it does have its beauty too (babbly, blabla ...)

I agree with Lotharingia, what summer. It's midwinter here in Australia. No romantic snow but lots of rain. Thanks for reminding me of winter can really be like.

Ian, nice thoughts on Winter, and I too hate the excessive heat, give me a lovely cool day and a roaring fireplace to sit in front of, any day.
Perfect, expressive poem.

I agree. Very refreshing indeed!(or did I just bite into a peppermint pattie?)
No, seriously I really enjoyed this one! Take care.

Thank you all for writing. The heat in Ohio has taken a turn for the worse. Oh to be in Deutchland! Or in the rains of Australia. Of course, I'll be complaining about all of the ice on these hills come January.
