Five O'clock Flight

When you left
I felt sure
I'd be okay,
that your leaving
was probably a good thing,
for both of us.
But I soon realized
that wasn't so.
Everyplace I looked,
every corner of the house,
the places we went,
the restaurants,
the movies,
and even my walk
to the park,
just wasn't the same
without you there.
You were part of me,
in all I do,
in all I say,
you are part of me
in every way,
and having you gone
has increased my need
to hear your voice,
your laugh,
and to hold you,
when occasionally
you cry…
oh God,
I love you so.

And then,
when I came home
today,
your voice
was on the answering machine,
you were coming back today,
on the five o'clock flight.
I laughed
liked a star-struck kid,
I danced around the room,
glanced at the clock…
an hour to go…
and raced to the airport.

Now,
standing here
at the gate,
awaiting your arrival,
I think,
What if she didn't make it?
What if she missed the flight?
What if…
and then I saw you
come through the door,
saw your eyes flash,
your smile light the room,
saw you run to me,
leap into my arms,
and cry "Daddy!"

And as you push back
from my chest,
wipe the tear off my cheek,
I think…
A week is just too long
for you and mommy
to leave Daddy
alone.

Thanks maureen and hardrock; as if you couldn't tell that was for my daughter who's 19 now, but the love and memories never die, they only grow stronger.

This was so lovely. For me a week was too long for a daddy to leave with his son.

Thank you Martie,Kynder, Deborah1, and Lynn Dale...for your kind words.  Thought I'd catch a couple with the little difference at the end...caught my family too. Missing loved one's is easy to do, isn't it?
