In my solitude I see myself clearly as tho looking into a well, to find reflected in its depths a still, cool image freed of sham.  All my fancies, deeds and desires march themselves before me, unloosened from the bars and barriers that consciousness of self builds as a wall around my introversion. In solemn parade they pass; many of them in cap and bells of Fools...a few, austere and kindly, and numerous the crippled, weak and halt! The Fools are those light efforts of childishness that time cannot bedim, with which I beguile myself in hours of play; tinseled things that life has left untouched through all the years.  The stately ones, the shades of good that in my heart I meant to do.  Regally they pass, unconscious they are spirit things...dead, so many, before they breathed at all.  Then those most dear, most tender, and most frail...dead Dreams!  Born and lost in travail.  Loved and nourished and laid away.  Dreams...not of plentitude and splendor, not of gold nor of fame...not of heights nor of Heaven...but only ghosts of cherished Hopes.  They pass and whisper low, in hollow toneless chant..."Bereft...bereft...bereft."  Ah! Then could I cast a stone into that still, revealing water and break the reflection there into a thousand times a thousand sparkling, rippling waves!  But lo! turbulent tho the waters are, still within my heart and endlessly, march on the shades of me that might have been...and my solitude is haunted with the visions of lost dreams!

Rex..."the shades of me that might have been" says it so well for me.  You are indeed "a master of mood and form."  As with all you write, I love it.  Hardrock
PS (personal) From page 94 of your book, Songs of Sorrow. Such a nice feeling to have it.

Pretty! I love the bit with the dead dreams. How sad! Great work.

I enjoyed the part where you still hold the memories after the reflection in the water is broken up. Great work!!!!!!!!1
