Prompted, after a fashion, by lotharingia's "Stratagem"

two ghosts were born of a summer
saddened by their separation
quarantined among millions
feeling the burning isolation
detachment

each searched ever for the other
looking into eyes
sometimes too deeply
always turning away-- hurt alone
discomfited

desolation reached a peak
the grounded souls' surrender to fear
sent waves of hated despondent
terror of remaining lost, lost
utterly

two ghosts found each other of a spring
hesitant, so bruised, realization dawning
do you know? do you know?
the possibility too much to hope for
heartrending

staggered by fervor and passion
mingled with tumultous forfeit
desperately reaching for that day
they lived in flux, together, apart, love, pain
faltering

till wakening one day remembering
purpose, fact, reason, resolution
the passage of centuries not to be denied
being flung into one lifetime
transient

perfecting the happy charade
gracefully avoiding bitterness
for the difficulty, the subtly enforced separation
wrought by the time, by society
superficial

winter came within, without
Yule wine, Julian year fading
earth softly sobbing snow for their going
quietly, one then another, softly
passing

two ghosts joined each other of a second
finally a love that time lay down for
twining, woven, wrapped around
your deepest joy cannot match their kiss
forever
forever

What a beautiful, serene poem, Portia. I am in love with your writing!
And extremely flattered that you were sparked by Stratagem.
Especially since I wrote a poem inspired by your Muse piece after I had read it. I haven’t posted it yet, though.

I had never considered ghosts quite that way.
Lovely poem.
