oh for an old aunt
some emily who has been through this
more times than I had ever been aware
whose cool touch and soft words
could make me believe

an aunt with an old teapot
from which chamomile and mint and catnip flows
so that I might find sleep
some time. peppermint
to ease my aching head and eyes and stomach
catnip to ease my mind,
chamomile to ease my racing wakefulness.

and if my body stops aching
will my heart, too?

but emily's time is done
she has been and gone, the dear
sweet thing, her joy that knew no bounds
came crashing down in my cold lies.

and now I am faced with
someone else's sarcophagus
a well-preserved skeleton
with a little too much memory clinging
-- ah, me. it is all too close.
he, they, it, we are
too real. too much for me.

Pandora was a child.
She knew nothing of this.
Would that I had had you here with me
to help me slam it shut
or to at least ask the little beasties their names
and purposes before they all escaped into my head
and heart.

It is no use, no good to wish.
No candle will shed light into this.

Portia,
Another excellent poem!
Do I detect that your beloved aunt passed away a while ago and you have been reminded of this at the funeral of another loved one? Or am I totally out? I hope I am wrong and she and everyone else you know are still going strong!!

"For God's sake, he's a poet. Poets are meant to feel miserable. Otherwise, what the hell are they here for? What are they going to write about?"

Thank you catalinamoon...

lotharingia, "The poem is not the poet."   I have lost no one, thankfully. This was a comfortable theme in an uncomfortable night.
