The Shores of Alone

0 posted 2000-07-13 12:47 PM

It's a short drive to work, only four miles,
through country roads that used to be forest.
Today, on that road, I saw three dead creatures.
A skunk, a squirrel, and a porcupine.
As always, this saddens me.
I want to step out of my car,
give the little ones a proper burial,
before they are smashed beyond recognition.
I keep going, because I am unprepared, and because
it horrifies me too much.
A few months ago, there was a cat,
lying in the middle of the road, fetal position,
seemingly asleep, but I knew better.
I did stop that time.
Banged on the door of the nearest house.
Asked, "Is this your cat?"
The man looked out and said casually,
"Yep, never could stay out of the road",
carelessly grabbed him by the tail
and threw him in a bush.
I returned to my car shaking.
Looked back and saw the cats friends gathering round his body.
I cannot comprehend this lack of concern.
It still haunts me.
But today, it's the forest creatures who die.
Innocently going about their lives,
wandering through the trees.
A death machine hurtles into them
out of nowhere. They never stood a chance.
We stole their home,
and no one has the decency to care.

~Cat,...you've caused tears.  *sigh*...I think of the same things....how we took this from them and put them right in the middle of danger."Death machines",...superb title for those darn things that we depend on so much...I call them death capsules ever since two of my friends were killed in a horrible accident...made me think about a lot of things.  Back to the poem,...These poor little things that are probably so scared and *sigh*,...oh,...thank you for writing this.

~BTW,...on Sun. my kitty was hit by a car and I am in the middle of some pretty painful realities pertaining to his life. He is alive,..but still at the vet and hanging in there. Needed his jaw wired and loads of stitches,..he's on a feeding tube,..had a cathetar????(sp),...crazy...still waiting to hear if he needs plastic surgery for the lack of circulation now happening...aaaghhh.  *Sigh*. You have affected me immensely (sp) with your words. Take care. *Peace.

Hey kid, I wrote a song on just this subject.
anyway, yes I know what your saying in this one, I spent over $500. for a cat I didn't know once, seeing it get ran over, it lived with me for 11 years.
But I was just going to post another road hazard peom of mine and saw this,
just be carfule on the wild ones they can still move, and will bite.
Love, Light.
Joel.

I howl a mournful song, that echos within my chambered heart, for all to read? nay for all to feel.

That is very insightful and true.  We have become a world that no longer cares or even thinks about what we do and how it will effect us later.  Very good poem!!

Some people!!  I know CatalinaMoon I feel the same way about animals and most people's lack of feeling or concern for their own pets or wildlife.  It's so saddening, all we can do is hope to awaken a few readers with poems such as this, and help all we can, be a volunteer at the local animal shelter and feed and care for your own wildlife around where you live.  They all matter, wish more people would realise...  Great timely piece

I'll tell you this...... No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn.....

Being somewhat of an environmentlist, as well as being a vegitarian, this poem moved me quite a bit. How someone can disreagard any part of nature is beyond me, esspecily cute furry little critters! This poem is great, and it makes a wonderful statement!

poems with a moral to tell are hard to write but i think you have written this very well...this reader can feel the intense desperation and earnestness of the poet within these lines...again well done and i hope this poem will serve to remind us all to take better care of these creatures who share Mother Earth with us

Cat...I too am an animal lover.  I don't hunt, fish, or kill of any of God's creatures..not even spiders, snakes or mice.  I just catch and remove them.  Seeing any dead animal in the road really bothers me.  Thanks for sharing...Hardrock

Cat, thanks so much for writing this poem! It made me cry (I've been doing a lot of that reading poems here recently!) I could never write a poem like this because it would hurt too much. I love animals madly (have been a veggie since age 12) and seeing them dead on the road is so terrible. Such a senseless end. The death of any innocent creature is an awful tragedy. We humans call ourselves "humane" and yet we respect life so much less than any other creature on the planet. I could go on forever on this subject ...
And Spitfire, I hope your cat is OK, I’ve got my fingers crossed for him/her!

CAT,

One of the problems of our new society is that we are all too busy to stop and look at the great things this world has to offer. Too busy to say Hi to the neighbor. Too busy to stop and do just one darn nice thing for someone.Too busy to realize the creature of the earth were here first.
We should all stop, look and listen, too the earth that breaths.
Our nation as a whole has compleatly lost all touch with what Life is ALL ABOUT.

When my problems started I was driving to work and saw a rabbit that had been hit in the back, he was still trying to run with his front legs and was franticly going no where...just like me... thank you for touching this nerve....instinct is strong but mindless. Sorry to ramble but you moved me.

Cat...
How well I do know what you mean... I grew up in the country and it was all to common to find animals dead along side roads that were once their homes. My parents never could understand why it saddened me so to see that, but I have always loved animals beyond belief. Great poem kid!

Roads

They travel for food
To feed their brood

As the babies wait
An endless fate

It's a hunger burn
Without mother's return

The animals cross our future
Their death is not by nature

We drive our roads of future
Death's road is our nature

Our babies wait in turn
For Mother Nature's return

From this Cat lover, thank you for caring enough to stop and attempting to allow at least one cat a proper burial.  I believe that there are too many people with pets that don't deserve them...which makes me wonder about people with children...Dee
