The Shores of Alone

Note: Since my muse is quiet today, I thought to share these two I did some time ago. For the record, I am not tortured and miserable about either one of these relationships. They are more observations on what I see as the hopeless situation of marriage.

ON THE ENDING OF A MARRIAGE

I thought it was settled.
Together forever.
Thats what the minister said.
How did we get
to this place?
Your kindness
slipped away
like a remembered dream.
Now you are not
my friend.
You criticize,
you demand.
Where went my lover?
The one who wanted
to hold me forever.
Faded into a morass
of discontent.
I thought it was settled.
I was wrong.

A NEW MARRIAGE

I, the diehard romantic.
Maybe this man
will not let me down.
Maybe the promises
are sincere.
Sweet affection,
stability-a quiet strength.
Beautiful kisses.
Maybe it will be different.
Yet he too changes,
ever so subtly
at first.
Now, I barely remember
when he kissed me so much
my lips were bruised.
When I was so happy..
Now his lips are cool,
distant,
and so rarely shared.
How did this happen again?
Not the same as him,
but not so very different.

Your voice speaks for millions who experience the slow death of love every day. Very well done indeed.

In the searching lies the answer. Oft we do not meet that part of ourselves that we were looking for... and that happens. But some do so achieve the impossible - kisses bruising till the very end...
But how does one know?
Your poem is very true

Who would have ever known, are you my twin?
I finding myself relating to your words.
In as deep a denial that I find myself now, I still cannot say that I do not know what you mean.

Thank you for writing this.

There is no death so slow and agonizing as the slow death of love.  Well said, Sandra.  Hardrock

The way you write about marriage it does seem rather hopeless...some of my opinions..
of course in the beginning he bruised your lips kissing them so much because it was a new and exciting physical attraction...a sensual attraction..and as time passes it becomes familiar.
I believe the relationship has to grow from a friendship and perhaps it will survive based on a meshing of two spirits...
As of August 1, 2000 my second divorce will be completed so I am not an expert on what makes a marriage work...but I do know lots of things that don't work.
The friendship thing is my latest theory and I am building new relationship with this in mind....take care...James

I've often wondered about this  very subject myself ... is  love  meant  to start  fast and  hard and  die out  leaving us left wondering where the passion and  sparks  went ... or have  we  just not found the  right person ... still gazing at the stars  wishing  for the love people can only  write about...

Again Cat you have captured my heart, I do miss this place, and your writings so much, I'm glad this is old, but it must be new also, you wouldn't have brought it up.
I understand this side of love all to well.
With white dove this will be my third, and last. I will keep it alive with all my heart.
Not only for our sake, but also to let you all know that love does truly live forever.

Love you kid. keep the faith, keep your heart.

Joel.

Very good job yet again.
I also am thinking of ending a marriage of 12 years. The love I once had is severed. The love I now have is strange, almost like a daughter, rather than a wife. I get so aggravated at the fact that this has happened to me.
I have heart felt sympathy for you.
