The Shores of Alone

0 posted 2000-07-04 07:44 PM

Sitting in the bar bursting with exuberant laughter.
Cheap drinks flow like water.
So many happy poeple, yet strangely
I feel more alone.
I sip my drink and look around.
An expectation of something absent turns it bitter.
I remember better days.
A special man by my side,
conversation to inspire,
the anticipation as he takes my hand.
Such hopeful excitement-will this be the one?
The destroyer of my lonliness?
Now I know the hopes were in vain.
He was a destroyer all right.
Nearly crushed my soul to dust.
I suppose it was too much to ask,
to find happiness
at Happy Hour

"I remember better days"...great line.  I think I've been to that bar....one too many times.  Nice imagery here...could almost smell the stale beer and cigarette smoke.  (Oh wait..I DO smell it.  It's my computer room.  Never mind.)  Loved it.  Hardrock

I wish that they would take away all vestiges of their memory when they left or changed!!! Why must they leave that little something behind and always spoil the "Happy Hour".
Lovely Poem - so sad and so true!

sometimes, the loneliness we feel is so great that even a happy surrounding produces no effect.. and sometimes the sight of people looking happy does not cheer us but only remind us of some unpleasant memory.. what a nice way of putting loneliness into words, great poem, catalinamoon.

An excellent poem, Catalina. Sadness, lonliness and pain very well expressed!
