       I heard her go down the winding stair;
        Then her footsteps on the floor---
         And I knew she had gone forever
           By the closing of a door.

       Perhaps someday, should she come back,
             Ascend the winding stair
          And open wide my dusty door---
         She'll find me waiting there!
