Monkey and the Jar

Like the monkey with the jar.
I hold my love within with a closed fist, but very far.
Not able to pull her out holding on to what I love most.
I might as well push her away, like a spectral ghost.
The irony of it all is if I’d just let her go, and withdraw my open  hand.
Then set free my love for her, that I cherish most, to see where she will land.
To land within my heart she is already there, maybe but I’ll never know if I don’t.
So to you my love I’ll open my hand, knowing that, my love for you will be forever.
No matter where you land.

For White Dove.
All my love.
Joel.

I howl a mournful song, that echos within my chambered heart, for all to read? nay for all to feel.

Joel....it was curiosity about the title that brought me here....Few probably understand it.  Can I explain?  African natives use a jar or gourd to capture monkeys...they place sugared rice inside the jar or gourd, with a small hold cut in the side.  The monkeys will reach in, grab a handful of rice, closing their fist around their prize.  But the hole is so small, withdrawing the clenched fist is impossible.  So, even though they have their prize, they are trapped until their captors release them.  Freedom is just a matter of letting go....but they hang on, waiting for the fate that is inevitable.  You are a wise man to let go Joel....in time the winds of fate may blow the jar over, spilling the rice of love all over you.  If not, there are other jars in the forest.  Good words here....loved it.   Hardrock

Thank you, Hardrock, for explaining the title. I was curious about it too, but I pictured a monkey trying to get a screw-top lid off.
And thank you, Joel, for always writing from your heart. Your words are always touching and beautiful.

I like this poem Joel...as the monkey opens his hand and is set free so shall you be set free.  Love is something you can share with more than one.... James

Joel, you continue to astound me. Your images and poetry continue to grow more and more vivid and profound... and also more wistful and lonely. I truly hope your love returns to you soon. Your words are so true-- the clenched hand yields no prize. I know this for myself as well. Hugs to you, and strength to you as well.

Joel, another intense and heartfelt writing. If she does not come back to you, it is not your fault, because you have a wonderful heart. Take care

Take the chill from an icy heart
take the dark from the depths
take all the reasons why you shouldn't,
You do.
