Why I Write Poetry

by

Michael Auguste

Upon the wall I hear the chime
It's two o'clock and time to write
To once again put words in rhyme
What use if they do not see light?

So like a drug, a fix I need
I seem to crave this form of art
I thrive upon the written word
For my existence it's a part

But as a writer, is it fame
A hope to mingle with the best
To make a household word my name
To see if I can reach the crest?

I only know why this man writes
To me it's much like therapy
A kind peace that soothes the soul
These words that make the shadows flee

A part of me to leave behind
When I am swept from off this earth
These poems are given to my son
Let him decide his daddy's worth

Much deeper will he view my heart
He'll see my hurts, my loves, and fears
Perhaps learn from my honesty
To carry him throughout his years

And while I'm here I want them read
To know some joy I have brought
In some way held a stranger's hand
With simple poems that I have wrought

I want my heart to touch their own
To bring them peace and offer hope
To show them how my strength has grown
And how with life I've learned to cope

You have done what nobody could have done for me this morning. You've inspired me to write a poem. And yes, your legacy will be passed on through your poetry to your son and his son. What beautiful thoughts you have expressed, and  in addition, inspired a tired poet to write one more verse
Thank you
Liz

Well said Michael! Who knows why poets are 'afflicted' with the need to write? It amazes me at times the way the words can just be there. You've hit the nail on the head with this poem.

Michael~
Well, if you need a reason ...
you've got plenty to choose from.

What most touches me is the want you have
to leave a legacy of who you were for your son.

That is a priority of mine in my writing.
He will come to know his father greatly and
the tender heart that beats within him.

Great job, my friend.

Dee,
Thank you, dear friend...I find you the interesting one...the more and more I see of you, the more I like...take care.

Liz,
To wake up this morning and find that my poem had inspired one of your own precious gifts to be written was a special treat...I've read your poem and never fail to be in awe of your wonderful talent.  Thank you.

Poet deVine,
I'm also amazed how words can often just be there when I sit down to write. Thank you and I hope your day is a good one.

Martie,
It's always a great pleasure to see you reply to something I've written...thank you.

I feel that no man can express himself better, or more honestly, than he is able to through writing.  It shows not only your broad character, but your small points as well.
Thank you for your explanation, and for allowing me to ponder my own reasons.
Great poem, great thoughts.

Michael, I must agree with everything mentioned above by everyone else, and simply add my "beautiful" ...

Paula,
Thank you for the thoughtful reply...it's always good to hear from you.

Marge,
Yes...a legacy for my son...for him to search the depths of his father long after I'm gone and in a way, have my thoughts still alive for him to learn from.  Thank you.

Trew,
Thank you for the "great poem, great thoughts"...I hope your day is a good one.

Michael,
this well strung together poem is indeed a legacy for your son but also a blessing for those who travel life's journey with you, through your poetry.
Thank you for posting an honest and lovely piece.

Your friend
Kethry.

You have captured what I feel perfectly.

I couldn't have said it better myself Thank you for making me think once again about why I love writing so much.

Michael-

all you've said - every word - were I to write 'why I write' would be there
yet a bit more - I suspect my son and my daughter may be shocked by my passion - they may wonder to whom I wrote - they will know before I'm through - I hope = Thank you for this
