Today I thought of red Schwinn bikes,
Of long ago's and little tykes,
Of playing catch, hot summer days,
Secret clubs and hideaways,
(No girls allowed, that was a rule,
'cause we were boys, and we were cool)
Knowing life would never end,
That he would always be my friend.

Once I wrote of home each night,
Of memories in fading light,
Today in sorrow, darkness fell,
And to a friend, I bid farewell.

Red Schwinn Flyer Bike

When I was just a little tyke,
I had a red Schwinn Flyer bike,
                With monkey bars; banana seat,
I was in heaven, my life complete.
Upon each spoke, a baseball card,
How "Mickey" hummed, when I rode hard,
(Don't rub it in, because I know,
today that card, is worth some dough.)
I rode that bike, both day and night,
Taped to the front, my Dad's flashlight,
Free as the wind, no cares at all,
Upon my bike, was ten feet tall.

My bike's no more, and now I'm grown,
It is a car that I now own,
But as I park at home each night,
I often see in fading light,
                Memories of a little tyke,
Atop a red Schwinn Flyer bike,
                With monkey bars; banana seat,
And of a time, life was complete.

Mike this one really brought back memories for me. I had the girls version of the bannana seat bike. Great handle bars for towing friends!
Mine was green with of course, my very own basket. Friends outweighed the basket in more ways than one... oh the good times on those happy trails.
Thanks for sharing this one!

He always will be your friend, Mike. We'll all have a glorious reunion one day and life will be complete, more so than we could ever have imagined. HUGS

Mike~
I've sensed a sorrow -
Lots of hugs, my friend.

Very tenderly written.

This is great...and it's nice to keep that little kid alive and grinning in our heart's eye...this was just really a "feel-good" read!  Thank you!

There is no better word than bittersweet to describe nostalgic poems. Good work, Mike.
