Sitting at my roll top desk,
Whiling time away.
Sorting through the jumbled drawers,
I dream of bygone days,

Older now, and wiser...
At least I hope that’s true-
Than when I wore that nickel star-
And said goodbye to you.

Abilene, and Ellsworth-
Those were the glory days-
When everybody feared my gun,
Were sure to watch their ways.

You came to me a weeping-
Saying, “I am so afraid-
A knock will wake me in the night,
And I’m a widow made”.

You asked me if  I’d quit my job-
And we could start a ranch...
And watch our boy grow tall and strong
You gave me every chance.

Duty’s a harsh mistress-
And now I’ve paid my dues.
I tamed the towns that hired me,
And all it cost was you.

Someone told me yesterday-
You live in Santa Fe.
Married to a merchant...
And doing well they say.

I guess sometimes a man must choose-
Do what he has to do...
I made the bed in which I lie-
And all it cost was you.

So often the price we pay, dear Troubadour, is not fully felt until far into our lives. I enjoyed the old west in this piece, and as always, your remarkable poetic voice.

Slinger~
Sometimes in our reminisce, too late,
we find things that have cost too much.

This is a sadly-written piece of you.
