(A friend this morning had labor induced three months early.  If she hadn't, both she and the baby would have died.  I saw her this afternoon and she is fine, her beautiful baby daughter weighs only 2 pounds 8 ounces...and I touched her...it was one of the most moving experiences I have ever had...the baby is stable at this time and the mother will be alright.)  Thus this poem.

A Prayer for Life

Life is so fragile,
its delicate arm is made of velvet
and it breaths in muted cords
fluttering with the harp
cascading notes like questions
into the small space that comforts.

Nestled in a cocoon of softest flannel
I touched it today with a finger
oh so large and callused
and not nearly clean enough from scrub
to disinfect the longing that her skin absorbed
or to sponge the fabric of tears that tore me

back into another room with more tubes
and breath a machine that pulled and pushed
when all around said stop
and let the spirit that is rising go.

In that soft fingertip of love
I held my heart and prayed again
for it has been so long in coming,
so long since I prayed for life

I pray now.
< !signature-->

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.
(ee cummings)

Experiences like that can really show one how precious life is, right, Martie? So many people ready to give up and throw in the towel and a little baby fighting for the chance to live....that says it all, as does your poem.

Beautiful Martie. Many are the kinds and ways of love and a babies touch is so special.  Glad you were there to experience this...and for the wonderful way you shared it with us. Give your friend and hers my best.

Martie -

That you can glorify God with such beautiful words - shows to me that you pray with every word you speak - I must believe God answers such prayers and will answwer ours - as we all pray for this so tiny baby

You would be suprised at just how determined a prem baby can be and the will that it holds to live.  My baby (now 3) was born 10 weeks prem, her weight was 1.2kg just under the size of a bag of sugar. I bought her doll clothes to wear and still had to roll them up.  My mother inlaw would not change her nappy incase she snapped one of her legs. (at this I smiled) God blesses us with precious little gifts and your friend has been blessed. Touch, love and a little prayer is a good start.  The road ahead may not be an easy one, but one worth taking slowly... my prayers are with you all

I could say the obvious and say that this is a beautiful poem, which it is, but I think Sudhir said it best, your words really captured the fragility and beauty of life, your words carry the full awe of your experience leaving us in the same beautiful awe that you felt. THank you for this gift Martie
