Balladeer found himself wandering,
The Miami streets one night.
He'd consumed his private bar,
And he was feeling pretty tight.

His thirst was monumental,
His throat felt bare and dry.
When to his relief a derelict,
With a brown bag passed him by.

As our ‘Deer watched in need,
The bum would tip his head
To the bottle in the bag
As if to get the dregs.

Now ‘Deer was feeling needy,
For what the old bum had.
So ‘Deer offered the derelict,
Ten bucks for his brown bag.

The derelict's hand shook a bit,
As he accepted ‘Deer's ten spot.
And watched in fascination as
‘Deer downed the bottle in one shot.

Now, Balladeer ain't too choosy,
And there's little that makes him choke,
But this time he nearly gagged,
As the brew slid down his throat.

"That is the worst drink in the world!"
Our Balladeer exclaimed, aghast.
The derelict agreed with him,
"You sure drank that bottle fast."

"You see," the bum continued,
"In order to be legit,
With this case of tuberculosis,
It's into that bottle I spit."

That old Balladeer - the undefeated Guzzling Champion of the World!

Incidently, I have it from an unimpeachable source that the very same thing happened to Toerag, too!

Ole Balladeer might have a rep
for tipping a bottle or two
and Toerag's slightly tarnished style
might be scary - from a virgin's point of view,

Then there's LngJhn, he's the "cat"
that's caught up in the middle
known to hawk up a fur ball or two
to solve a dead kitty's riddle!

But he can write (when the mood strikes)
in such soft and romantic prose
where he comes up with such great stuff
I'm afraid only his Muse knows!

He really doesn't hate cats all that much
in fact I hear he's got seven!
He dresses them in little kitty clothes
one had kittens, now there's eleven!

heh, heh, sorry, Long John, got carried away!

Heather - It wasn't all that bad (apparently) - I heard from another unimpeachable source that 'Deer has acquired a taste for this brew and makes frequently sortees back to Miami when he feels really dry.

lil White Dove - And how DID you think this was going to turn out?  You can email me and I'll be sure to include your ending in my next tribute to 'Deer, or Toe, or Parker, or Rebel, or that new scalawag, Wilfred.

Hawk - or, in the case of 'Deer - glug glug glug

Julie Ann - Congrats on your letter of acceptance - Think about this: During pledge week, you may be asked to drink some things....

Nan - Yep, poor ol' 'Deer.  He's such a trusting soul  *heh heh*

Claire - all those icks.  I take it you liked it???

Corinne - You have truly flattered me with your response.  You are a very very talented poet, and for you to dedicate a poem to me in a response.. well, I consider that a wonderful compliment.  As for pointing out my softer side... thank you for that, too.  I try to hide that side of me because I'm shy about that.  Big hug for you, lil Corinne.

Bonnie - What's that?  A smile?  Thank you for reinforcing my intent.  There are a lot of people in the forums who are hurting right now.  If I can lighten their day for even a moment, then these poems have accomplished their purpose.

Is there a kitty in that tree?
Will little kitty come to me?
Come closer kitty, will you please?
Is it a kitty in my sights I see?

a poem is not worth reading out loud
unless there's a full beer-bar crowd
and all of the responses - a delight!
and not a 'Deer or LongJohn in sight!

O the mighty hiss was heard
when from both no defense of word
for what was said, or what was done!
and that is clearly...all the fun!
