Freedom Song

In my soul I forever mourn
in a pitiful, sobbing wail.
Yet: from my imprisoning walls of darkness
I saw a nightingale

And I wished to dance in meadows,
floating weightless in the air.
I wished to slide on moonbeams
to live without fear, or cares

But I’m locked inside the fortress
Built deep inside my heart.
And I do not think this nightingale
Can tare this cage apart

Yet I saw a sight that warmed me,
to my spirit long since cold
I saw a lovely nightingale
Singing sweet and low

He gave to me a ray of light
That there was hope left here to dream
That living in the black of night
Is not all what it seems

What a beautiful ray of light you share
with these lovely phrases.
