Life's journey is so arduous
Yet I did plod along
Each time a road did intersect
I prayed to not choose wrong.

I've passed some folk, upon the trail
Said my piece, and went my way
Shared love and laughter with a few
But, alas, none chose to stay.

I've walked alone down many paths
O'er mountains crest, meadows wide
Through clutching vines and rivers cold
At the crossroads, sat and cried.

The sun, it seemed, had lost its heat
The nights, too long and cold
The hills loomed higher every day
My heart was growing old.

But ever onward I would delve
Never sure about my quest
With limbs of lead and ribs of thorns
Each day, I'd try my best.

That final night I eased myself
To rest, beneath the stars
Defeated, weary, terrified
From a journey gone too far.

Then as I slept a tortured sleep
And willed my soul to fold
The scent of dewberry filled the air
Your hand, for me to hold.

You found me in my darkest hour
Held me 'til the rising sun
At dawn, you helped me to my feet
Said 'Our journey's just begun'.

Life's quest, it now has meaning
Gentle grass, or jagged stone
Through this journey, never ending
You're not meant to walk alone.

And so our travels linger on
You stay right by my side
Without you on that fateful night
My soul, it would have died.

Though time shall one day claim my life
Don't say goodbye to me
I'll wait for you beneath the stars
To walk, eternally.

Trew this was wonderful. We all have our journey to travel and in time we find that special one to travel with.

This was sort of an interesting foray for me.
I am trying to get this rhyme and meter thing down, but... whew!

Doreen ~ Lucky indeed!  You know, I have no idea where that line came from... 'ribs of thorns'.  It just sort of wrote itself.  Huh.  Thank you for reading and replying!

Mark ~ I'm hoping it's real    If not... uh-oh!  Glad you found it powerful, that's cool.  Appreciate it.

Bill ~ Good morning to you as well!  I'm so very glad you enjoyed this and that you took the time to stop by.

Seymour ~ I'm honoured to hear you say that.  Thank you.

kitkat ~ Thank you!  I do think it's important to have someone with you.  A friend, a family member, whomever.  The trick, I have found, is not to go it alone.  And if that person happens to be your love, then all the better!

hiya Trew,

My compliments to you on this poem you share...

"then as I slept a tortured sleep
and willed my soul to fold
scent of dewberry filled the air
your hand for me to hold"

This speaks volumes...

Trew~
Since I adore Doreen's poetry, I found it not surprising that her favourite line was my favourite line.

"With limbs of lead and ribs of thorns"

Gorgeous read, and don't worry I can't rhyme and they ain't thrown me outta here yet.

This was a terrific poem...

"Though time shall one day claim my life
Don't say goodbye to me
I'll wait for you beneath the stars
To walk, eternally"

was my favourite stanza...it expressed love so beautifully!

Take care and be happy

Oops!  I seem to have let this one elude me for a while.  As such, I would type a full page if I responded individually.
Thank you all for your wonderful words.  I am honoured that so many took the time to read and to reply.  I know that it is commonplace here, as that is the purpose of the forum, but it still leaves me smiling every time.

Thank you all again,

Trev.
