When I Can't Do What I Want To Do

a line from Tennessee Williams
in a movie famous
more for it's actors?
perhaps.

but it got me to thinking

(and that could be a dangerous thing)

for the line was intended for "action"
of what one could do when
one was young
and when one is older
perhaps it can't be done anymore

well, I know one thing.

I wanted to write when I was young
and I tried and tried and tried
and failed miserably
and thought even then
it would take time and age and
experience
before I could do what I wanted to do.

Then I wanted to write when I had
a few years under my belt
and I tried and tried and tried
and failed miserably
and thought even then
it would take more time and
experience
before I could do what I wanted to do.

I want to write now
with even more years under my belt
and although I might not fail as
miserably as I had before
it will still take more time and
experience
before I can do what I want to do.

Someday I will write
and do what I want to do…

make a difference.

If only to me.

Karilea, I think you are achieving that goal very nicely now. But I know the feeling, I have always wanted to write, and no other profession has ever worked for me. Yet, I still can't  make it happen in any significant way. I wonder just how old, how much experience, is necessary. If I get much older, it will be too late to appreciate
Keep writing, you are a fantastic writer.

Sandra, I had a friend, Sandra, many moons ago...

I appreciate your comments, more than you know. Having a kindred spirit, and sometimes,  "spirits", will help both you and me...be open to them, they will appear...and if nothing else, time will take care of us all...

and if you do not make sense of this tonight, that is OK...for the spirits are walking...

Karilea-

The title is perfect - and so are the  thoughts - my life has followed a similar track. and I'm now 3 score and eight - and still saying the same thing - Yet I have improved - The two things I've learned -
Some are naturally witty and writing comes naturally to them - and others (like us) are those who must try, rewrite, reread - rewrite often many times to go half the distance others achieve easily. Occasionally I get "luky" and something will 'flow' and rhyme and I will think 'post it', even then
I will let it sit - and come back - and reread- sometimes post sometimes correct/improve further.  I think your talent will take you far - keep working at it -

On another note - there are things I could do when I was younger - I am much slower at now - some say that is an improvement. - Yet I wish I had my present knowledge and patience along with the younger body ~G~

Mr. Yeats...what you say is taken to heart...my own just said "you say not enough..." and in yet another breath "you say too much..."

so I do know what it is to have an old soul in a younger body...and you have done well to advise me...and I will continue to learn, and to try...whether I succeed or not...

But write you do Sunshine ... and you do it so very well, in my humble opinion! You wrote "make a difference, if only to me", but sweet Karilea ... you've accomplished this goal of writing many times over, as I've been touched so often by so many of your lovely words.

Best wishes,
/Kit

Karilea~
The spirits are walking indeed !

I feel the presence of a herd of them ...
shaking me
awakening me
Saying now is the time
N O W while the moon
sits high in the sky
N O W before the morning sun
draws nigh
NOW before all
of the befores are gone by
n o w and so ...
now it is

Spirits walking
my way
calling
my
name ...
now - now - now !
and I write to appease them
to appease me
to offer the night respite
from keep
of things I need to offer

Spirits walking from lands afar
stopping to rest
within me

Oh yes, my friend ...
they walk among us this night
It is a night of now

Yeah I think I know what you mean...you want the poem to come to life before your eyes...to make you laugh, or smile, or cry.
Me too...when I write a poem and I can read it back to myself and say hey this adequately expresses the feeling that I wished to express...I feel good...really good...James

I tried my hands
at a skill
to write well
with a quill.

I dipped a feather
in an ink-well
and encouraged myself
to think,
ended up naught

I had forced words out
like a forced smile
for a photograph!

It doesn't work.
It doesn't.

A couple of tries more,
and I gave up.

Threw the feather,
dropped the ink
challenged the weather
and stopped to think.

Years later,
I was struck,
maybe by lightning
or maybe by its shadow,
I do not know!

Today I still struggle --
struggle hard to write,
but then I stopped thinking
a long time ago,
I just write --
Words simply come out,
and then the thoughts come around
and ask of me "did you just do that?"

well that's how it is done by some...
and I am pleased with my effort
more than I am pleased of myself...

At least I am pleased,
"happiness is a blessing"
the writers had written.
The others that have real talent,
they can think and then write,
they can write when thinking
or even before!

Yes, they have talent.
Mine are somewhere else, I hope...
------------
Inspirational poetess of the Ra...
you do a great job at writing, you do have the talent, and I am just seeking som inspiration to rub some of that on me...

regards to you O Karilea,
Sudhir...
