Arachne was a weaver, of cloth both gold and dark
she challenged gods, to show that she could leave her mark
and make a glorious tapestry of life both fun and stark

The gods took up the challenge, from them there came a theme
to weave a tapestry for which the human race would dream
a tapestry of passion, of love and romance that would steam

The judge would be a victim, of the world's travail
someone who had never loved, with whom love could not prevail
someone bent to sorrow, cast down, who wore the veil.

Arachne saw, that to surpass the gods, she must be sure
seek assistance of another, then Cupid 's frame she saw,
the god of love and wanton, how could she ask for more

They met when came the evening, and whispered in the dark
and Cupid was a player, thought it would be a lark
together they both plotted, sang songs of love's great spark.

Weaving the fabric of romance, Arachne wed the loom
whilst cupid quoted inane verse, and acted as the loon
and all the while Arachne wove, envisioning her fortune

Cupid gave inspiration, Arachne wove the cloth
dark and gold together, of love and of great wroth
of passions dark and passions deep and lover's plighting troth.

Then came the dawning moment, the tapestries were done
was it enough, to catch the heart of the lost and lonely one
and cause her to forsake her vow and turn towards the sun

The tapestries uncovered which would take the victory
Arachne's piece both bright and dark and full of mystery
when the gods revealed their one, Arachne wept in misery

For grace beyond, humanity was in the weaving there
glimpses of love, and passion's price, and all redemptive care
Arachne hangs her head in shame, yields defeat, is so aware

that she has lost, no redeeming grace is shown her unlovely piece
and in passion rends the cloth, giving fragments quick release
to scatter in the world, to settle, where they may bring peace.

Arachne stands defiant, prepared to take the shame
When she hears the lonely one calling out her name
Why did you destroy  the best, love's passion must have pain.

kethry i tried very hard earlier to reply to this poem yet my computer gave me the hardest of times!!!!
but besides that i thought this piece was lovely..i loved the vacation you allowed my mind to take as i read this....and the idea of having a clothe of both "love and great wroth"  that my friend is such a deep thought...i would have been happy if u said it was nothing but love..but the fact that u put the darkeness in as well to make it a complete emotion!  what a thought indeed for it is real...i loved this poem...challenge met
