Peal of the Dead

When at last the call came forth,
the Jesters, Jugglers and Fire Jumpers
abandoned their preoccupations
to lend a hand to the wagoner
as he sang a song to the living
and chanted a dirge for those not....
The Peal of the Dead.

Robert, what a scene...on many levels.

Thanks Claire, this was inspired by a very strange accident indeed.

Ok you guys win.

A few years ago I was at a friends house for a bar-b-que and bonfire.

I am a kid at heart and thought how neat it would be to jump over the fire in the dark. I didn't though (perhaps maturity won out) and I never said anything about it to anyone either!

Well, several of the younger guys thought of it too all on their own and started jumping over the fire. It was OK until 2 of them hit head-on right over the fire! The lightest of the two fell into the hot coals.

In the emergency room they had him sedated for the pain was terrible. He had burnt his hands and arms. 2nd-3rd degree.

I was there with his mother and the doctor. She asked him when they would peel off the dead. I looked at her and said...What??!! What did you say??

She then repeated that she wondered when they would peel off the dead burnt skin. I said...."Wow...that sounds so cool" Then explained that it sounded poetic in a way.

So, when I got home that night I lay in bed thinking about peeling off the dead. The next day it became "Peal of the Dead" my poem. It is about the dark ages when the bubonic plague hit Europe and the wogoner's called out for the people to bring out their dead.

I printed it out and gave them a copy.
