To me it seems that charities
vie to win my sympathies
by selling pins and fripperies
designed to catch the eye.

The ribbons made white, red and blue
the daffodils, red noses too
the cute stuffed toys, one task to do
you, from your money pry.

I wonder where the goods are made
how can compassion, shift to trade
from goods we buy, while charities fade
into the sunset sky.

And so I ask with confused pause
where will this lead and in whose cause
a business, not enshrined in laws
exploits the weak and shy.

Voluntary charity has had its day
the expectation now to pay,
for pieces of junk that come my way
no choice to give, or try.

And saddened by the shift in me
I no longer give to charity
instead, weighted in all I see
a worthy cause - good-buy

gathers the flowers weaves the garland."-

A great way to look ... the looking glass shows true reflections... however bad it may look, it's still what it is...

YES!!!!!  This is a really nifty poem, with a true message, and a great format.  I really like the AAAB CCCB theme - terrific composition - and it flows as if spoken naturally, too!  Wonderful work, Kethry!

Why thank you everyone. This poem came when I walked through a shopping centre and was accosted by no less than seventeen distributers for charities. As you can see I was MAD, > hence the stinging verse.
Be well

An interesting view. Next time I feel guilty for not "doin' my bit" I'll remember your poem.
